This rifle gained worldwide popularity after pioneering the return of shoulder fired big-bore rifles for shooting enthusiasts.  As a result of its unique operating cycle, the M82A1 easily fires the largest commercially available cartridge in the world, the .50 caliber.  Yet, the Barrett M82A1 develops the lowest recoil force of any comparable rifle.

The M82A1 operates on the short-recoil principle.  Founder Ronnie Barrett designed the shoulder fired .50 caliber rifle.  The recoiling barrel and bolt assembly acting against innovative spring and buffer assemblies replace the sharp recoil impact with a longer-acting lower recoil force.  To further reduce the recoil load, the M82A1 is fitted with a dual chamber muzzle brake.  The muzzle brake redirects high velocity gun gas to lower recoil by almost 70%.  The net effect is a rifle with the felt recoil of a 12-gauge shotgun.

With these time-proven methods and innovative designs, the Barrett M82A1 offers safety, rugged durability, and reliability to the big-bore enthusiast

The most accurate and expensive rifle I have ever owned. Recoil compared to a bolt action .50 cal rifle is considerably less. I can shoot all day and not have a sore shoulder. Ammo is very expensive but both ammo and gun are a great investment. I've seen the quality ammo that I had purchased a year ago almost double in price. The gun is estimated to go MUCH higher with proposed gun ban. i had paid more for this rifle a year ago due to the Military contracts taking priority and a 1 year waiting list, I purchased it from someone who waited the year and then sold it to me with no wait costing me more (supply and demand, I'm actually looking at buying another one now). Barrett's web site is listing 1-2 months, and this site states they are currently in stock. Great gun, good investment, can't go wrong if you have the money to buy one. Stock up on ammo as it is increaseingly hard to find and getting much, much more expensive & save your brass. Down falls; price of gun and ammo, VERY heavy in case, gun must be partially disassembled to transport in pelican case, difficult to find an out door range that will allow you to shoot it (AZ anyways), the optics needed to achieve the full distance with the correct drop bullet cam are limited but the level of marksmanship with a spotter would require some of the best training in the world, at ranges of 1500 meters + a slight breese, elevation, temperature, barametric pressure and even curvature of the earth even need to be taken into account but with knowledge the gun can keep up mith massive destruction, I could only find 2 companies that make reloaders, and most ammo is delinked military surplus reloaded match grade ammo needed for accuracy is 2x expensive. Positives; extremely well built gun, rare, will probably be banned soon with "grandfather" clause increasing its value, Barrett is a well known military dealer, VERY long range accuracy, semi-auto, great investment although i will never sell mine, very low recoil considering the caliber, dependable. Priced much lower on this site then what I paid for mine but have seen only 1 or 2 in gun store in AZ selling for $12,000.00 or more, pelican case and many more. Deffinately would recomend, I would get one while you still can, the government is trying to take this away from us with the next proposed gun ban.
