M odel  99  KIT. The Model 99 rifle is a robust and accurate single-shot rifle. At its heart is a one-piece Alcoa 7000 series aluminum alloy extrusion. A heat-treated steel M1913 optics rail is attached to the top of the extrusion by closely spaced high-strength structural fasteners. The match-toleranced barrel is hydraulically pressed and locked into the extrusion resulting in a rock-solid, unitized structure on which to mount a rifle telescope. Safety is unparalleled because the cartridge is surrounded by both high-grade gun barrel steel and the aluminum extrusion.

The bolt is machined from a single piece of proprietary grade steel. Its 15 lugs safely lock it into the machined barrel extension. The bolt's few moving parts are its extractor, ejector and firing pin assembly. It is reliable and easy to maintain.

The Model 99 is easily disassembled without tools by removing three quick-release assembly pins. These pins attach the trigger housing and bolt guide to the receiver assembly. The match-quality trigger design is proprietary and virtually maintenance free. The bipod is easily detached for benchrest shooting.

The Model 99, like all Barrett rifles, is continuing to be improved. A more effective muzzle brake is now standard.

Other manufacturers may cut corners on quality and design. Barrett does not because even in a single shot, you get what you pay for.

Rifle deserves a 5. I give the kit a 4 due to the scope. Sell it on ebay and get a real scope. It DOES work fine, but I prefer high end glass. I've owned a Barrett Model 99 for about a year. It has proven utterly reliable and the design is so rubust you'd have to drive a tank over it to hurt it. Function is dirt simple and is not much different than any bolt action rifle. I am a handloader, so I've never shot surplus or military ball through this rifle. I can only attest to its accuracy with handloaded cartridges of my own making. With some simple prep and using 1940s era Lake City Brass, CCI primers and 50BGM powder, under a match bullet, I was able to create a load after roughly 20 rounds that would go into 1/2 inch at 200 yards. The hardest part of shooting the rifle is the muzzle blast. When firing under a covered bench, it will literally clear the bench of any object not bolted down. The recoil is not at all uncrontrollable, amounting to a solid PUSH as opposed to a slap, which is a testament to the muzzle brake. But the side effect is massive blasts to the left and right rear sides of the shooter. People on benches around you will become a tad irrate with you. hehe. Which is kind of entertainign I have to admit. Accurate shooting is not hard with the M99 and I believe it to be the most accurate .50 cal Barrett makes. With literally no moving parts other than the firing pin and trigger assemble, its one solid launching platform. Once one learns not to flinch from the SOUND and SHOCK WAVE of the shot, holding tight groups is fairly easy. One downside is weight. Like EVERY .50 BMG rifle I've fired, one can consider them all crew served weapons because hauling them around takes effort, best shared with a friend. The M99 is no different. Its heavy, especially in its Pelican case. But that weight, plus the muzzle brake, means one can lunch the shots with relative comfort. If you have the property or facility to shoot at truly long distances, I would highly recommend the M99.
